Low-dose CT screening for lung cancer now available

If you are a current or former smoker, you may be at risk for lung cancer. But with low-dose CT screening, cancer may be detected in its earliest, most-treatable stage, before symptoms even develop. The machine works by using X-rays to make cross-sectional images of your chest. The test takes just a few minutes, and uses only one quarter of the radiation as compared to a standard CT, which reduces the amount of your exposure.

Who is eligible for a screening?

  • Smokers who are 55-77 years old
  • Persons who have smoked a pack or more of cigarettes a day for at least 30 years
  • Current smokers or those who quit less than 15 years ago
  • Persons with a family history of lung cancer
  • Individuals with no symptoms of lung cancer such as cough, shortness of breath or chest pain

The American Lung Association states that low-dose CT is the only recommended screening test for lung cancer. The screening is covered by Medicare and most private insurance plans for patients who qualify.
